""I've never understood why they're called Ghost Lights."
She doesn't reply immediately. She just stands, completely mesmerized. But then she murmurs, "I get it. They are so beautiful, and I want to reach out a hand to touch them. But they are too distant for anyone in this world to hold; like ghosts."
"Do you always have to be so poetic?" I ask with a small smile.
She tears her eyes away from the lights, the corner of her own mouth tugging upwards. "Yes."
She tilts her head back again, watching the sky in awe. The landscape surrounding us is a softly undulating expanse of grass, and we are alone in the cool night air. Just us in this empty land, stood under the brightly lit sky. As though we are the only ones left in the whole world. As though the world was made just to be seen by our eyes.
"It's so beautiful," she whispers.
"Yes, it is." I'm not looking at the sky. I'm looking at her. "
