Ally Cotton is 13 and her older sister, Celia, has been missing for six months. She disappeared without a trace and everyone's given up looking for her. Ally's mum is depressed and won't get out of bed and Ally feels abandoned.
When a black cat mysteriously arrives in Mirror Mirror, the family's vintage shop, Ally can't work out how it got inside. She calls it Velvet - and it instantly disappears again. How did it get out? Where did it go?

When Velvet, turns up again, Ally realises the old mirror in the shop is a portal into another world, another time -the time in which the clothes you are wearing were first worn.

The story takes place in a small town surrounded by forest near the Oregon-California border. Of course it does, after all, the highest concentration of Qi is found in forests where ancient redwoods grow. You might be wondering, what is Qi? In Japan it is called "ki," and in India, "prana"." The ancient Egyptians referred to it as "ka," and the ancient Greeks as "pneuma." In Africa, it's known as "ashe" and in Hawaii as "mana." Qi, Prana, Ki, call it what you will, this energy is the life force itself.
