When he was born life was good, they loved him unconditional, then as he got old enough to walk and talk, his life turned for the worst. For the period of time that Devlin is a part of their lives, there is some stability for Holly and Jessie. He provides for them financially, and when the family gang of outlaws find out she is married to a lawman, they keep their distance for a while. Holly contacts influenza and dies. This story takes place after that, when baby Owen is about seven months old.
