Joie is a failure of science.
At least to her father, a once-renowned geneticist, she is. Where Joie was supposed to be tall, she is short. Where her eyes are supposed to be green, they are strange yellow-gold. Where she is supposed to be smart, she is simply... average. Joie is left trying to find meaning through her art and the consequences of being genetically altered.
But when a fellow "failure" -a golden-haired boy calling himself Payne- presents evidence of others like her, Joie knows she cannot stand and wait around for her father to come back any longer. Especially when her father's actions go too far.

One day Hannah is escorted to the regional government office and told that the Consultant who delivered her, who labelled her Flawed got it wrong! Now, she is being relocated back to her birth parents, to live as one of the Ninety-Five- all medically and legally judged as perfect. Meanwhile, in the mountainous regions of District 2, Cato Hadley and Clove Kentwell have trained their whole lives for the Games. Nevertheless, their ambitions change when they, without meaning to, find themselves in the Games together. They are both determined to win. But if they don't, what will happen to them? The brainwashed tributes who land in New York City know nothing of who they are or where they are from. They do not remember Panem, or the Games, or even their own names.
