Hailey is a law student at Central Chicago University, and when she's not studying, she's working - two jobs, so she can afford living away from her family and be independent of her abusive father.

Jay came home from Afghanistan less than a year ago, shortly before his mother died. To be honest, he never really came home though. Being back in Chicago is hell, and while he refuses to talk or seek help, he doesn't care enough to hide it from anyone.

When Hailey meets Jay on a drunk night out, she doesn't think she'll ever see him again. She doesn't want to, either. She likes to keep to herself. She doesn't know his past, and he doesn't know hers. She doesn't know how much he's struggling. And little does she know he's Will Halstead's younger brother...

This is a story of what might have happened - if Upstead met years earlier, long before they joined the police.

What if you wake up one day and all you know is gone? What if you wake up to be someone you thought never existed? My name is Jesse Lee Soffer. Okay, wait. Let's try that again. My name is Jay Halstead. In the world I woke up to today, Jesse Lee Soffer doesn't exist. Our real selves don't exist. One Chicago never existed. What we used to act has turned into reality. There's only one problem: We have no idea what to do. We're not cops. We're not firefighters. We're not doctors. None of us are first responders. We're actors, and we need to figure out a way to deal with this. We need to know the truth. But what if the lines between reality and fiction become blurry? It's hard to tell what to believe when you have to doubt who you even really are. ---- This book is finished, but it will be edited as soon as I get the time. The book starts where Chicago PD Season 7 ends. All rights reserved, have fun reading! I'd love to hear your opinions, so please comment or vote if you like... PLEASE NOTE: Apart from the One Chicago characters and cast, this story is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to other real persons, living or dead, or to other stories is purely coincidental. As I am using actors' names, please note that the storyline is fictitious and based solely on my love for One Chicago. I have never met any of the cast and do not mean to offend anyone or portray anyone in a particular way. Although actors' names are used, the characters are fictitious and do not represent real life One Chicago cast members. The characters in this story are nothing more than exactly that - characters. I fully respect all One Chicago actors and their privacy.

Hailey Upton-Halstead received a call while at work one day that she never thought she'd get. She had a little sister, barely 4 years old, abandoned at Chicago Med, beaten. Her mother had signed custody over to her and fled. Now she had a decision to make with her husband, Jay. Set starting towards the end of season 5; Hailey and Jay are married but no one in the unit (except Voight and Trudy) knows.
