A drug addict lies dead, her pale blue eyes locked on eternity. She was a "no one" and a "nothing". But the man who stares down at her, El Shareem, had once been touched by the selflessness of her love. He struggles to control his rage toward the drug and those that peddle it.

In order to have any hope of revenge, he'll need a few unlikely things to happen. First, he'll have to evade the psychopath Hendrick 'The Knife' a relentless bloodhound who happens to bear a title that opens all doors: Captain of the Emperor's Honor Guard. Second, Udrah's killers, a group led by an irascible Sherlock Holmes-like figure everyone calls Double must fail in their task to track him down. Third, he'll have to dodge the wrath of the Queen, wife of the Emperor and wielder of a bit of a grudge. Last, he'll need to gather a group of criminals with enough vengeful hatred in their hearts to carry out his brutal plan against the most feared man in the Empire: Xin, a demon-possessed criminal kingpin who is protected by the Deep Lords and their magik, the Assasin's Guild and the Emperor himself.
