They were the epitomes of each other's lives, until they were pulled apart. 

Athena was a witch before she turned into a vampire and as you know, vampires are stripped of their magic when they turn. 

However it was different for Athena. The witches loved Athena as their own daughter. So, she was able to be immortal, and hold onto her magic. Of course many people don't believe it's real until she proves it. One day in the year 1914, she comes home to see that the love of her life is nowhere to be found, and neither is her family, his family. She cries herself to sleep that night before packing and leaving to New York City. 

It isn't until one day in 2010, where she makes a chance encounter with Elijah, that she decides to go back to the place where it all started. He promises her that he will avenge his family.
