You met Julius Caesar and he's a pretty (and devious) lady...? Forty years before Caesar's fateful crossing of the Rubicon, there was another dictator - one who set the stage for the empire to come. A powerful strongman who declared himself the savior of the Roman Republic as he burned it to the ground. What was he thinking as he shattered hundreds of years of tradition to march the legions on Rome itself? What about when he sank the city in mass terror as he put up his famous proscriptions? In the historical record, we are left with only pieces of their story, meaning to really understand what he was like, we had to be there. Modern-day everyman Richard Williams knows little of ancient Rome or its citizen-farmers, praetors, or garum. However, he does know he needs to work three jobs a week to support himself, broke up with his girlfriend, and has died in a traffic accident. Therefore, he's rather confused when he wakes up in Rome two millennia ago and meets a seven-foot tall horned woman with massive assets. Why Britain? Why did the Romans invade Britain in 43 AD? Their empire already extended from the Channel coast to the Caucasus, from the northern Rhineland to the Sahara. The great age of conquest had ended a few decades before. Three legions had been destroyed in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest by rebellious German tribesmen in 9 AD, and the emperor Augustus concluded that the empire was overextended and called a halt to new wars of conquest. Britain was an afterthought. It was not about economics. Rome's rulers were already the richest men in history. Nor was it about military security. The Channel was as effective a frontier as one could wish for. The invasion of Britain was a war of prestige. Hence why the book is presented in a casual manner, to make the stories easier to grasp than a mere formality. Learn how the Sicarii, Romans, Sadducees, and early Christians are involved in this war (or not at all in the case of the Christians). The book also recounts the lives of people before and during the war: such as Messiah Jesus of Nazareth, Emperor Nero, Apostles Paul and James the Just, High Priests Ananias and Ananus Ben Ananus, Governor (and later historian) Josephus, Zealot leaders John of Gischala and Simon bar Giora, and Generals (and later emperors) Vespasian and Titus. In general, this is a Christian book, which aims to put Jesus in his respectful place. Now published! Gods of Death Want Life
Wrote part of this back in 2013. It is a companion to the canon and completed it Feb 2021 and EDITED better June 2021. Still not fully edited, but I loved reading it again and again. It's ending is supposed to be a cliff hanger to a potential spin off series I have been writing for years which follows the First Triumvirate, BEFORE Caesar becomes Dictator for life. Still unfinished but I have been writing that series HBO! STARS! WHOEVER WANTS TO PICK UP THIS GENRE. lolComplete
