In the aftermath of Project Insight, thwarted by Captain America, Black Widow, and Falcon, all secrets hidden by SHIELD and Hydra were revealed, including all the secret projects planned by the latter. One most prominent among them, was their experimentation with the Mind Stone hidden in Loki's scepter. The organization sought to make enhanced individuals infused with the gem's power, two of which would cross paths with the Avengers in 2015, during their mission to uproot Hydra's remaining plots. However, there was a third individual that they would encounter, even before the events of Age of Ultron, who would join them, and become the honorary 7th member of the Avengers.

When new intel comes through about a Hydra weapon, the avengers split into two teams, one checking out a new base, while the other scours an old one. It's no coincidence that the intel comes through, and they find files about experiments done to one person. 'winter 2.0' the team calls her, but to Bucky, the fear sinks in as memories resurface about one soldier in particular, Ace. Stronger, deadlier and she made the winter soldier in him afraid.
