Rei Akiyama is your average student/MMO player. One morning he wakes up early to meet his friends to pick up the highly anticipated MMO, Sword Art Online. While in game, his friend Jun a.k.a Reznoir, can't find the logout button. After being dumbfounded by the situation they are teleported to the spawn of all the new players, where the GM, Akihiko Kayaba explains that there is no manual way to logout unless all 100 floors of Aincrad are cleared only then everyone is able to logout. Rei is terrified by the fact that Akihiko makes the statement that "If your HP hits zero, the nerve gear will simultaneously destroy your brain."
