Hair extensions that are made from real human hair require proper care just like your own. Since clip-ins are not exposed to elements for a long time, they require much less care. Tape-ins and fusion hair gets exposed to the elements such as sun, wind, and chlorine and, therefore, can get matted, tangled, or can even fall out. But taking care of a few simple things can make your hair extensions to stay looking healthy for longer.
The first thing to take care of is the shampoo and conditioners that you are using are sulfates, paraben, and salt-free. Use gentle fingers to lather and condition so as not to tangle and strain the hair near the bonds. If you are planning to take a dip in the pool, apply a heavy leave-in conditioner on your entire hair to put a barrier between your hair and chlorine.
The second thing you can do to protect your hair extensions is to limit the use of a hairdryer. Air drying will help the swollen hair cuticles to return to normal temperature gently and it will keep the hair shinier for longer. If blow drying is inevitable, apply a hair protectant spray on your extensions and use your dryer at a cooler setting in a downward direction till they are 90% dry. Wait for the hair to completely dry before brushing it or using a straightener or a curling iron.
To prevent catch and tug on your hair while sleeping, it would be a good idea to use a silk pillow or a satin cap. It will also prevent tangling.
The last thing to take care of is to avoid excessive sun exposure. If you need to be out in the sun for longer periods of time, try to use an umbrella or a hat. By making a slight change to your normal routine you can make your hair extensions look healthy and last longer.
