The Deadbeats

[Copyright © 2017] City girl Magenta Ferrer has a paralyzing, all-consuming fear of the dead. The only problem? She can see them. The only dead person she doesn't fear is her late father Hector who spends most of his time peacefully haunting the city park and devising ways to finally cross over into the light. Unfortunately, nobody ever seems to believe her when she says she can see spirits, so she's kind of given up on trying to convince them. The only person she's still trying to convince is her newly-remarried mother, who seems to have forgotten all about her amid the hype of her new marriage with a man Magenta cannot stand (as well as his equally insufferable son). When Magenta is forcibly moved into her stepfather's ghost-filled home and transferred to her stepbrother's even more ghost-filled snobby prep school, she's forced to live with her greatest fear on a daily basis. And then she meets Summer, a goth girl who seems to know all there is to know about the dead, who claims she can help Magenta. But before long, Magenta also meets Jack- a boy who is either dead or alive (she can't really tell)- who claims that he, too, can help her. With two different people claiming different things and with an army of spirits haunting her every waking hour, Magenta is left with only one insurmountable challenge: how can she beat the dead?
