WICKED regretted sending Leo up with the first batch of Gladers when he began to understand the motives and inner workings of the Maze. It was interfering with their trials.
Now, it's a race against time between the Creators inserting obstacles into the Maze to try and kill him and Leo figuring out the Maze variables to escape. When Leo continues to outsmart them, it puts his friends in jeopardy and places him on a path for blood. With Thomas's arrival, Leo believes him to be the missing link in the plan to escape.
