Everyone's heard of the traditional 'Twelve Days of Christmas' song. But what they don't know is that it's more than just a song - it's instructions. For one day a year, the only barrier between humanity and the magical realm is weakened enough that anyone clever enough can cross over into the magical realm. Tierra Emmers comes from a family of Aegis - people whose responsibility it is to handle the magical creatures that slip through the cracks. After years of following her parents around on missions, she's finally old enough to apply for an apprenticeship - the final step before she'll be recognized as an independent Aegis. In honor of the mountain of paperwork she has to trudge through over the next few weeks, Tierra had a free pass on the winter's monster hunting and a much-needed vacation with her best friend, Carmen.

But when an accident sidelines Tierra's parents and a determined Aegis shows up on Tierra's doorstep, her plans for relaxation are shattered. When Tierra and Carmen are swept up in an uncertain ritual, they're trapped in a mysterious land and two of the worst things for an Aegis to be: unprepared and untrained. Not only does she have to worry about shielding Carmen from the more extraordinary aspects of life as an Aegis, but she has to figure out how to get back. When the rules keep changing, will they manage to prevail? Or will they fall prey to the same dark fate of everyone else who's ever attempted the challenge?
