I took a playwriting class and wrote scenes based off of prompts assigned by the teacher. Here are those scenes.
Prompts:
1. "One character wants a book"
Write a short scene in which there are only two characters and the first character wants a book from the second character.
2. "The conflict scene"
Write a short scene with two characters. First character wants a tangible object (like the book, but you choose your own object this time) from the second character. The second character wants something intangible (love, forgiveness, adulation) from the first. Be sure neither character can get what they want, at least not easily.
3. "Event scene"
Write a short scene with two characters. There is conflict between the two. One character either gets what they want or does not get it. Regardless, that character also gets a third thing-something unexpected, something more than was bargained for. That character experiences some sort of change.
4. "Character attitudes"
Select a simple activity that one of your characters (in your final project play) does regularly. Such as making the bed, walking the dog, taking out the garbage. Write two versions of a brief monologue in which the character explains the steps that he/she takes in the activity from start to finish. In monologue A, something really good has just happened to your character and they are in an extremely happy mood. In monologue B, your character has just received some terrible news.
5. "Direct address monologue"
Write a direct address monologue that uses the audience as a specific person or persons. Your character directly addresses the audience as opposed to speaking to other characters.
