Xander Ulrich never had a normal childhood, despite being born to a middle-class family in Gotham City. While his family avoided MOST crime, they were devout 'devil' worshippers. Specifically, they were devout worshippers of Trigon. They even sacrificed their child to the demon conquerer.
But things didn't quite go as planned. The ritual for which they sacrificed their only child led Xander's rebirth as a living ghost, but he lost all his memories when Trigon resurrected him. The only thing he remembered was that the people in front of them had sacrificed him, which subjected him to unknowable pain. He hated them, and so he used his new found powers to rip his parent's hearts from their bodies. It wasn't long after that he was found by a certain muscle bound villain in Gotham City.
