Although we would like to believe that the majority of human beings are aware of the senselessness of discriminating based on attributes they have no control over, current world events are beginning to highlight the shaky grounds on which that statement stands. The aim of this essay is not to mull over the different ways in which we discriminate, but only to ask the question "is ALL discrimination hateful, bigoted and ill-informed?". Are we deluding ourselves with idealistic intent and missing reality altogether? In the age of Covid, we have had the unfortunate opportunity to continue perpetuating our divisions by separating ourselves further into camps of maskers, anti-maskers, vaxxers and anti-vaxxers as well as the usual right, left, religious, atheist and racial separations that have plagued us for eons.
This essay highlights the inconsistent ways in which we discriminate and proposes that perhaps the best way forward is to own our discriminating biases.
