After being adopted into a new family in Riverclan as a kit, Needlepaw begins to feel outcasted in comparison to his sibling. His parents acknowledge her achievements more than his. Needlepaw begins to see a tom who promises a future of pride and happiness. Taking the tomcat's words to heart, Needlepaw begins to act out and rebel against everyone he once knew, not knowing of the tragedy that would strike.

Fernpaw has to find a way to hide it until she can prove how she feels on the inside.
