Annabeth is part of the Chases, the family that runs one of the departments of the Magistrates. Annabeth's father, Frederick, runs this department. It takes care of all petty crimes. Percy is the Chase's houseboy, a boy who serves the family with what they need. Annabeth is walking through town one day when she sees Percy steal some bread. She watches him get caught but Percy gets off with a warning. Annabeth walks by and when the merchant isn't looking she steals some bread and cheese. She goes after Percy to give him the food so he wouldn't go hungry. He takes the food and flees but becomes a wanted criminal since it is his second offence. Witnesses say they saw Percy take the food. Meanwhile, Annabeth is also stuck in an arranged marriage with the son of the other head of the Magistrates but is falling for the boy who stole the bread when she starts meeting up with him during the night. One day, Annabeth is sitting in on one of her father's court sessions and Percy is brought in, beaten bloody. Annabeth must decide if she comes forward and faces the punishment-which would be worse for her since she is a girl-or let Percy take the fall for something he didn't do, and face a worse punishment for his second crime. **All characters belong to Rick Riordan** **Mature for language and violence**
