The story is set in Niriyain, an interdimensional prison world where those who enter can never leave. Cal, the son of two prisoners-Suilenroc, a thief, and Akemit, a disgraced nurse-has spent his life resenting the chains of a system that punishes him for the crimes of his parents. Meanwhile, the ruling High Council-a group of ruthless overseers who maintain strict control over Niriyain-becomes aware of Cal's newfound power and sees him as a threat to their secret plans.
