Fawn Hamilton has served in the army for about ten years, but after a traumatic event compromises her platoon, she decides to leave and instead joins a precinct in Brooklyn. Jake Peralta has worked as detective at the Nine-Nine since he was twenty-three and even though he has great colleagues, an amazing captain and no dull moments, he feels like there is something missing. 

Their paths cross when Fawn is introduced as the newest detective in the precinct, which renders Jake speechless, something that no one has seen before. This is because he recognises Fawn from his past, several years in the past... their past...
