In the early days of the reign of Augustus Ceasar, a group of young people attempts to navigate the highest echelons of Roman society. Sam, part Gaulish, Part Roman, is an outsider in the patrician family into which his mother has married. A good soul, he has married a young woman to save her from poverty and is trying to make their fortune. As he navigates the complexities of an unforgiving society, he meets a young Greek merchant who makes him rethink his entire future. Meanwhile, Sam's cousin Sabrina seems determined to ruin her chances with Marcus, whose disgraced birth prevents them from being together.
