His ability is stronger than his, and Seraphina's lost her own ability, therefore making him the Ace. When he observed and was around John more (against his will) he realized truely how corrupted he really was. It was far worse than a hot temper, and Arlo has made a grave mistake in letting John dominate the school. He's simply was too consumed by his ability to consider the people around him and manage a school with a reputation like Wellston. Unfit for an ace. He needed to make up for his mistake, he knew he needed to stop John, instead of leading the school, he's been destroying it ever since he's proved his worth, but he also knew that normal methods wouldn't work. John is special in every way, negatively or positively, and so, he needed accommodations. He needed to fight special with special. John's right where Arlo wanted him. Pinned under the King with a hint of annoyance and embarrassment, no matter how much Arlo might tease him, he'll never acknowledge the submission to Arlo, it was simply too horrendous and shameful. "Are you saying that because you want more? If you do, come meet me at my dorm. I'm sure we can work something out. "I'm not going-" "We'll have to wait and see." Arlo is meticulous. But amongst his special method to cease his violent and impulsive nature, Arlo finds his plan falling apart in his hands when he's also caught feelings for John.
