Before Twilight and the return of both Princess Luna and the elements of harmony there was just Princess Celestia and her niece Cadence, when a changeling spy approaches the princess speaking of an upcoming attack on Canterlot she has no choice but to plan a defence, but her royal guard are trained to fight off Changelings, in fact Equestria hadn't seen changelings for over a hundred years. The princess decides that now is the time to unleash her secret weapon, eight hired mercenaries that she had collected from around the know lands of Equestria and beyond, plus the new changeling Spy. Hopefully they won't fail in their first real mission.
((This is pretty much what would happen if the tf2 mercs were born in the mlp universe, so things are probably going to be a little different about them, you have been warned. Takes place a few years before the return of Nightmare Moon))

In this story, Princess Luna is faced with her inner demons, but she only has the will to suppress them for so long. Princess Celestia suspects something is happening with her dear sister, yet she can't figure it out. Whenever she asks Luna, Luna can't speak due to a curse. She ends up entering her inner self and attempts to fight it, but when she loses, all hell breaks loose and this time the elements can't stop this enemy, because as Luna loses. The elements of harmony are destroyed due to an ancient and forgotten power that Luna's inner demon knows about. It is left up to a single alicorn to fight off this terrifying antagonist. Afterwards, the elder sister took the responsibility of both the sun and moon, and peace and harmony has reigned ever since... or has it? What if there were an organization deep in the shadows who had not only WORKED in the night the younger sister brought, but committed crimes? That's EXACTLY what had happened, but the two sisters didn't know it until it was too late.
