When her ineffably beautiful older sister Eveleen dies, sixteen year-old Elide is forced to marry Crius Merrikh, the facinerous and arcane Lord of the underwater city of Abluvion. She will be his fourth wife and is destined to die like all the young girls before her, because only one thing can keep the people of Elysian from death when they are in Abluvion, and that is a kiss . A kiss that Crius Merrikh is not generous enough to give.

On the day after Eveleen's funeral, Elide's mother, driven to lunacy in her grief, tasks her with fulfilling a prophecy that foretells the fall of a powerful Abluvion. But the prophecy is vague and dangerous for Elide in her new underwater prison, and Lord Merrikh has become precariously infatuated with her.

In a world of deceit, mystery and romance, can Elide avenge her sister and learn the truth about the famed prophecy? Or when the time comes, will she find out what it's like to drown in icy depths.
