The scene sets in Paris, France, in the thirty-first century. It was Melody Swan's fourteenth birthday, and she just intended on enjoying whatever Maman, her interactive mansion interface did for her. After all, doesn't every human spawn in an interactive mansion as a newborn to save them from the outside world, which was so dangerous that even a step outside your mansion would kill you? Melody was one of the lucky kids, which meant that she spawned alongside a pet of her own: named Ajax. Everything she learnt about everything was through her Life Book. After all, didn't every human get one? Melody has always longed to go outside: to see for herself what was so dangerous about the world. When the doorway out finally opens, Melody realizes that the world is not what it seems to be.
