[Amby's 2024 Favorite Teen Fiction Novel]"This is all your fault, director's pet. This is a play. I'm not falling in love with you, and I would never ever go out with you, Jack Garrison."

Jack and Shayna can't get through a rehearsal without fighting.

Cheerleader Shayna loathes perfect Jack for her own reasons. Her boyfriend is pulling away, and she might hate Jack, but she's willing to play along in rehearsal until his feelings for her spill offstage.

Quarterback Jack struggles with starring in his uncle's play and his mom's cancer diagnosis. His rehearsals with his longtime crush and friends remain his lone bright spot under pressure from his castmates and father.

The costars might not see eye to eye, but their ongoing feud might not be the biggest issue as Jack's world starts to crumble. He'll need all the support from Shayna and the others to prepare for their performance on time. Will the cast come together, or will the curtain slam shut before opening night?

"I love how this book is turning out!😍 Not cliche at all!" - i_hatecliche "We might live next door to each other," Haley said, "but we don't live in the same world." Hooking her fingers around her backpack straps, she walked away from Jace. She had barely gone a few steps before he was at her side again. "What makes you believe we don't live in the same world?" he asked. "As far as I can tell, we do." "No, we don't. I'm...me and you're Jace Cortez. The dream of every girl. The friend to every guy. The star of the school. Girls. Sports. You're the ultimate player." "It sounds like you have a preconceived notion of who I am." "And it's one that has yet to be proven wrong." From books and a lifetime of sitting on the sidelines, Haley is convinced she knows how the world works, specifically high school. Everyone has a label and a box they fit in. This knowledge, paired with parents who are fighting, a brother leaving soon for college and a best friend who moved away has made her decide to never get involved. It will take being forced to work with her fellow juniors on a project, a boy next door with a infectious smile, a star gazer with an adorable puppy, and an unlikely pair of fangirls to make her see how truly wrong she was about everything. "IT'S NOT CLICHÉ!!!" - Moria987 "This is the reason y I keep coming back to this book...It's simply a breathtaking journey" - mariyamsajorawala "I don't usually comment but this is one of the best books I've read here. I love the fact that it's realistic and focuses on things that really hinder human interaction, perceptions and stereotypes." - yurfavegal "just gets better and better. Growing up in a toxic environment, sixteen-year-old Jay Foster has always had psychological problems, coupled with a quick temper. But one night something happens which finally pushes him over the edge, and as a result, he leaves his house the next morning with two things: his mother's gun and a plan. Living with a neglectful and drug addicted mother wasn't easy for Jay, and it definitely didn't help that his father abandoned the family while he was still a child. He harbored a hatred toward his parents, and that hatred extended to almost everyone and everything around him, producing a very troubled and damaged young kid. As Jay enters high school, he becomes very intrigued with one of his classmates. Kind of obsessed, actually. Her name: Mikayla Keeler. Mikayla is very unique, and like Jay, she doesn't seem to fit in with her contemporaries. Instead, the two of them keep each other company, and their friendship very quickly escalates into a romantic and intimate relationship. Despite having Mikayla, Jay's troubles continue to burden him. He and Mikayla are fighting habitually, his home life is still unbearable, and his time at school is hardly any better, made worse by a bully named Calvin. Their mutual dislike of one another leads to a lot of hostility, routinely leading to Jay being sent to his school's principal. One confrontation in particular goes much too far, resulting in Jay's expulsion from school. With everything seemingly piling up, Jay is very close to his breaking point, and late one night he is blindsided by the unthinkable, pushing him much too far and effectively planting in his mind a cruel and horrific plan for revenge.

Maya wants to be a famous actress. Maya also has stage fright. It's kind of redundant that she's in the drama club. She's just a stand in and stage handle because her first audition was a disaster. She could barely get out the words. She locked up and ran away. Sam has no problem being the center of attention. He nails all the scenes and monologues. He's confident and fluid. She wishes she had his confidence. Envies it, even. He's a cocky, narcissistic pretty boy. The school sees him as the perfect specimen. Maya can see through his facade as he pulls off. His so-called charms seem fake. No one is that perfect. Sam loves the spotlight, all eyes on him, the applause. It makes him want to go on, as the saying goes. Maya was someone he sees as a background actor, where she belongs. He belongs on the center stage. One date between them meant nothing. He moved on. They barely spoke unless it's in drama club. One kiss meant nothing. He always wanted to know how she kissed. He got his answer. Their drama teacher has now partnered them up as acting buddies for the next play. That was the last thing she wanted. The more time she spends with him during rehearsals, the more she sees him, his dedication, his passion. He's mesmerizing. Sam sees a spark in her when it's the two of them. Sassy as she is, there is a vulnerable side she shares. She's falling for his charm. She's falling for him. But does he feel the same way? Is he playing the charm on her to get what he wants? She has to keep it in, she can't break character.
