As I closed in on the buffer stretch of no man's land between our pack territories, determination gave way to concern. Traces of blood began to float past on the air and catch in my sensitive nose. Something was wrong. As I closed in on the border to Claire's territory the scent became thicker.

Denser.

Soon the metallic tang of fresh blood filled every mouthful of air.

It was the catalyst for concern to blossom into a fear that shot through my soul. That amount of fresh blood could only come from one thing...A battle was in process.

No.

That wasn't quite right, not with this amount of blood per square inch saturating the air;

A bloodbath was in process.

...

In the fourth novella in the Claire Menzies Saga; Alexi discovers that in the violent, seductive shadow world of creatures, just because he has finally done the right thing, does not necessarily mean that he will get his fairy tale ending.

I felt the bed dip as he sat down on the other side but I focused solely on my task until I was done. "This is a pillow barrier. Meaning, you don't breach this side of the pillows." I instructed, my voice firm. "What if I don't want anything between us?" Phoenix said in a husky voice, and I risked a glance. Bad choice. His eyes were dark and his gaze was on my lips, to my chest, then back to my lips. "Eyes up here, buddy." I snapped the third time his eyes went down to my chest. All he did was turn off the lights. When it was dark, he whispered," Can't I admire what is mine?" I had no answer, and turned on my side. He sighed. Despite taking two naps today, I was out cold the minute my head hit my pillow. I could only hope that in the morning, the pillow barrier was still there. ***** Adira has a secret, one she would do anything to protect.
