16 year old Kat Simmons lives happily in the country on her family's cattle ranch, where she spends her days rounding up cows, exploring the woods, and secretly admiring the son of the local pig farmer, the tough but reclusive Morris "Moe" Riker.  She's known for her good girl attitude, her ribbons at livestock competitions, and her constant companion, teen barrel racer Annie Schumann.

But one day, Kat receives a mysterious letter from Moe after not seeing him for a few days.  The letter reveals that he's stuck in the hospital with a broken leg and instructs her to immediately go to the abandoned barn in the woods and call the number at the bottom of the page for further information.

When Kat investigates, she finds a tiny spotted piglet running around in a circle of hay bales.  She quickly calls Moe, who reveals that little Buttercup is a runt and he put her there after his father instructed him to kill her, standard practice in his family, and begs her to take care of the piglet until he returns.
