16 year old Kat Simmons lives happily in the country on her family's cattle ranch, where she spends her days rounding up cows, exploring the woods, and secretly admiring the son of the local pig farmer, the tough but reclusive Morris "Moe" Riker. But one day, Kat receives a mysterious letter from Moe after not seeing him for a few days. When Kat investigates, she finds a tiny spotted piglet running around in a circle of hay bales. She quickly calls Moe, who reveals that little Buttercup is a runt and he put her there after his father instructed him to kill her, standard practice in his family, and begs her to take care of the piglet until he returns.
