By the person he loved, and that was painful. Each time he died soon afterward. Death gave him a 'game', in which when his soulmate falls in love he and his soulmate will live. But he rejects him, Death wins and he dies. And even when he would give up, well Death will have his soul and he will toy with him at all eternity. Many times it happened. Many times he got reborn.
