Cursed as much as blessed with empathy, Ava Monroe can't help herself when someone needs help, physically or mentally. Her escape from the horrors of people's minds is painting, but painting is exactly what leads her to Max. To be fair, she doesn't know who Max is when she meets him. She is drawn to his tortured soul, like a moth to a flame, and it just might be her undoing. However, Max isn't as willing as her brother was to get help with his PTSS, and his missing leg is a physical reminder to him of the horror in his mind and memory. He is ready to call it quits, but finds someone won't let him, someone who is willing to help him fight his battles. Ava doesn't care how dark and ugly it can get, and she is too stubborn to give up. Can Ava help Max find a reason to live? Or will his tortured soul drag her down with him?

Matty remembers his grandfather, his childhood guru, a great musician. The conflict was that Matty longed for fame while his grandfather didn't care. The only cure for her syndrome seems to be music, and she spends most of her time playing instruments and DJing. Her rejection of fame is similar to that of Matty's grandfather. She strives to remain low-key, which proves to be difficult as her talent continues to attract more and more attention. She works as a DJ in her best friend's club, which is becoming one of the most popular places in town. Living a glamorous life Matty decides to realize one of his childhood dreams of going to Italy and buying a Ferrari Testarossa. Unfortunately, he and Jimbo cannot control their urges, drive too fast and crash the car. As a result of the accident, Matty suffers from a mysterious, painful condition for which making music seems to be the only cure. Ashley suffers from Tourette's, but its symptoms are also alleviated by music and music only. Matty and Ashley learn of a doctor who successfully treats his patients with music and they excitedly go to meet him only to learn that their search for health and sanity is not over.

I can't bring myself to recognize the girl I'm staring at. Through her glassy eyes you can see that she's no foreigner to pain, whether physically, emotionally or mentally. I stare at this girl, and I see myself. I see someone who is strong and determined, someone who needs to love herself and believe that she can be loved. The tears roll down my cheeks as I realize that 'this girl' is Amiane Alana Rochester, a girl who's been through a shit-load of fuckery. * In medicine pain relates to a sensation that hurts. If you feel pain it hurts, you feel discomfort, distress and perhaps agony, depending on the severity of it. Pain can be steady and constant, in which case it may be an ache. It might be a throbbing pain - a pulsating pain. The pain could have a pinching sensation, or a stabbing one. To Amiane, pain is all of the above. Can she handle any of it?
