The story is set right at the end of season 3 of the anime.
Right after the retake of Wall Maria, Reiner, Zeke, and the mysterious Cart titan unable to be captured, Ymir, holder of the jaw titan, was planned to be eaten by Porco Galliard.
But when Porco dies right before the ceremony of illness, Marley uses the backup warrior. That warrior was trained alongside the other warriors. They fed him Ymir and he became the Jaw Titan. Casse Kyroli
