Those who refuse to worship the gods in the traditional way are sent to training camps and forced to join Tharadyn's every-growing militia. Arryn Aelwic is one of those people - his sordid outlook on life has convinced him that there are no gods worth worshipping.
Found guilty of heresy, Arryn is sent to a small, isolated camp near the ocean. The camp is governed by hardened General Vynctis, a man who polices the trainees with an iron resolve. Raised a pacifist, Arryn soon finds himself clashing with the strict word of Vynctis; and unwittingly strikes up an intense rivalry between the two.
