I hone in on the doe. She's still feasting, oblivious to my ominous presence.
I almost feel a flicker of guilt as I reach for my quiver and pluck out a finely fletched arrow and fit it into my bowstring in one swift movement. I think of all the mouths this doe could feed and pull the bowstring taut. I send up a quick prayer to Anuskalmen and loose the arrow.

I tried to look away, but before I could, his hand reached out, his fingers brushing against my skin as he gently lifted my chin. The touch was soft, but the way he held me in place was anything but gentle. "Do not take my cooperation as weakness, little lamb," he warned, his voice thick with something darker, something dangerous. His gaze bore into mine with an unyielding force, as if daring me to challenge him. I felt the tension coil in my body, and with a sharp, instinctive movement, I smacked his hand away, my pulse quickening, my breath uneven. "Touch me again, and this 'little lamb' will bite your fingers off," I shot back, my voice low and daring, laced with a fire I hadn't meant to show. His lips curled into a dark chuckle, the sound rich and slow, like honey dripping from his tongue. "If you were anyone else," he said dismissively, his gaze trailing over me with casual disregard, "you would have already been dead." ********** For generations, Maeli's people have been trapped within a never-ending forest, bound to a secluded clearing that no one can enter or escape. Determined to break this cycle, Maeli faces the growing darkness that haunts the forest, stealing hope with each life it claims. Then, one morning, she discovers a mysterious young man lying unconscious at the edge of the trees. Driven by a strange pull towards him, Maeli begins to unearth his hidden past and the secrets he carries-secrets that entwine with the forest's sinister power. She soon learns his arrival is no coincidence and he may hold the key to her village's freedom. But as Maeli draws closer to him, she is caught between the burden of saving her village and the undeniable pull of a man who could bring salvation-or seal her people's doom.

IMPORTANT: This manuscript is a rough draft - widely unedited. There may be grammar, spelling, and pacing issues. I've been working on this story since 2023 in my original manuscript and hope to one day publish the final, extended version. I could see him grinning out of the corner of my eye. He was enjoying this far too much. "Just do not ever scare me like that again, Jasper," I fussed. He winced as I moved the cloth across his ribs. "Or what?" he toyed. I stopped and glared at him, stammering, trying to think of something clever. "I-I'll... I don't know, but I'll think of something." Before I knew it, Jasper had his arm around my waist and pulled me into the tub with a splash. "Jasper," I gasped. In a world where humans and orcs have been at war for centuries, 22-year-old Lady Brenna of Blackwater Hold is sent to the Northern Orruk Horde - an unheard-of act. Her father, King Corvus, pledged her to the chief, Jasper Bloodborne, to save his own life. Were these orcs the beasts her father taught her to fear? She soon learns how wrong she was - and that her time in the Northern Orruk Mountains will change everything she thought she knew about loyalty, courage, and desire. ⚠️ Content Warning: This story contains sexual content, mentions of SA, miscarriage, abortion, violence, and gore. "Who's out there?" One of the men yelled. Of course only silence met them. I remained quiet and waited for the group to start moving again. "Maybe it was just an animal." Someone whispered. The person, who I assumed was the captain of the small squad, signaled for them to walk again. They clearly showed fear as they kept going; brandishing their weapons to guard themselves with. "Two are holding lanterns. I'll tell you when you're too close to them." I heard my friend whisper in my ear. I followed the men as I picked up another branch and waited for the right time to break it. They continued to walk through the forest, turning their heads in every direction as if an animal might lunge at them and rip their throats out. I guess in a way I was going to do that. "Go back a few feet." My friend whispered. I carefully distanced myself from the group and waited. "Where is she?" I quickly snapped the stick as soon as he finished asking the question. They stopped and two soldiers raised their lanterns to shine its light in the darkness. I quickly hid behind a tree before both of them turned where I was. A low frustrated growl came from one of the men, "The girl's playing with us. She's out here following our every move." How paranoia can cloud the mind. At nine years old, Silver decided to leave her village for the forest. Since then, she's been hunted; everyday is a fight for her life, every breath she takes could be her last, but she's determined to stay alive. Her life isn't the kind anyone would want to live but she's managed to survive this long so, what's a few more years?
