Cold War, 1989

The Soviet Union is on the verge of collapse, but there are some in the old guard that are unwilling to let go of the past.

Major Natalya Alexeyeva is a war veteran of Soviet Russia's Military Intelligence Directorate Special Forces, questioning her very existence following a brutal experience in Afghanistan. After another self-destructive episode, she is called upon by her superiors for an important mission to do what she does best. 

Donald Weaver is just a bright-eyed rookie analyst with the Central Intelligence Agency looking forward to his new career. Instead, he's about to find out that he is in over his head when new developments emerge from Eastern Europe that could spell World War Three.

The company wants Ellie to go and find the kid, and Ellie doesn't know if she can. The one rule she's stuck to all her working life is to never to go to America, but now she might have to. She will have to, if she wants to save the daughter she hasn't seen in years. Specialist (E-4) Johnathon Bomber is a member of 2/19th Special Weapons Group and the assistant squad leader of the team in charge of FSTS-317 AKA Atlas. Less than 12 hours ago Atlas suffered a massive munitions detonation that destroyed two bunkers and scattered damaged ammunition over the fifteen square mile clandestine site. Wounded was his squad leader, Corporal Stillwater, who is unconscious and recovering from surgery, Nancy Nagle, who had been injured by a thermobaric blast, and PFC Cromwell, who had been shot through the abdomen by a Soviet soldier. That leaves him in charge of a squad that has less than a half dozen members left out of almost 30, all of them wounded to one extant or the other, some, like Stillwater, should be in an ICU. He has to keep them all alive, and figure out what is next for the site and the crew of Atlas. However, the new Section Sergeant has decided to stay at Atlas and hold command, Group has sent reinforcements that are unfamiliar with the deadly atmosphere of Atlas, radiation and chemical levels are rising, and other people have plans for Atlas. It's going to be all John Bomber can do to struggle through everything Atlas is throwing at him. And when the CIA gets involved, everything is suddenly put in doubt.

Among such projects is the long standing FEMA mandate. Continuity of the United States government even after a nuclear war. That has led him to the Rocky Mountains, to an old abandoned and forgotten underground facility. Built by FEMA in the 1950's, what scattered data exists suggests its a small facility, one or two levels. A quick job so that Stillwater can return to the arms of his young wife. Written in 2014 the storyline involves an almost crystal ball view of Putin's growing aggression towards Ukraine. Mikhailya Groschev was born in the year 1952 in the Soviet Union controlled Ukraine. Her father is an Astrophysicist and a Cosmonaut, her Mother a successful doctor. Their family along with four other families is selected to participate in colonizing Mars at the time when America thinks it is winning the Space Race. A new Element is discovered on Mars that turns the mission and Mikhailya's life upside down. The mission fails as the Mars colony is rapidly falling apart, an immediate evacuation is ordered and lives turn upside down. Mikhailya's parents are cold-bloodily murdered and chaos ensues. Once the crew makes their return journey to Earth the next adventure begins. New characters are introduced and a chase across Europe from the Ukraine to Paris gets underway, the out of place Soviet teens must develop new allies while being weary of potential enemies. Due to the stabilizing properties of the limited amount of the new element they bring back to Earth, it becomes a highly sought after prize. There is espionage (NSA, KGB), kidnapping and a little romance too. Determined to keep what remains of her family whole, Mikhailya finds herself tackling adversity and overcoming odds that seem nearly insurmountable, just when she thinks they are getting ahead they fall back and need to regroup. The team gets separated and each group has their own hurdles to face as they adjust to the news of the USSR crumbling and nowhere to turn. Brother is pitted against brother, father against son and Mikhailya's family is caught in the middle. Mikhailya's life is forever changed on her final mission to reunite her family.
