Meet Millicent Belle. Although her name was sweet to taste and had a melody plesant to hear, she was shunned by not only her family but all of Siredell for the lack of a mark.
Every infant is born with a mark on the back of their hand. The mark is a symbol of the Gods, like the Gods are claiming the people as their own. Some people have the same mark; both people were claimed by the same God. It determines your destiny and your fate.
Millicent does not have a mark.
