Friday. May 11, 2001. John O’Connell High School. Atrium. I shake hands with my U.S. Government’s teacher.
“Good morning, Mr. Bruni. Today is my birthday.”
“Happy Birthday!”
I shake my teacher’s hand as I smile casually. This is my way of getting other people to wish me a happy birthday, which might seem immature to some people, but it works!
While today is my 18th birthday, I am not happy, personally, because it’s the last year I’ll be able to
earlier this year after realizing that I don’t have anything to look forward to, even if I am a senior at John O’Connell High School and in Special Ed
Today is my. Should I be happy? Yes. But am I? No, because I have been feeling apathetic. Being apathetic
The answer lies at the end of the tunnel.
I’ve been in Special Ed since the First Grade. Taking a test the second time while at UCSF is what put me here. I had woken up from a 21-day-coma in Peru from a traumatic car accident I had been in. I had suffered the worst pain imaginable, which was why I had to endure being in this circle of students. I’ve been on the Honor Roll on-and-off since my Freshmen year, proving to teachers that I am not as dumb as I seem. This year, however, has been tough since the school relocated back to its district of origin, the Mission, on Folsom Street.
I’ve been taking Study Skills since my freshman year. The class was assigned to
me because of my learning disability. I acquired it back in 1987 while on vacation in
Peru, my father’s home country. I was 4 1⁄2 at the time. I ended up in a 3week coma.
The day I woke up, I said: “Alex.”
Over the years I’ve heard different versions of what really happened: That the
pickup truck my family and I were on flipped over down a hill. An ambulance that drove
by noticed the upside down vehicle on the road and rushed us to the hospital. Because I
was in the worst condition humanly imaginable, my father and I were the first to return to
San Francisco wh

"I can't do this anymore", I whisper, a single tear rolling down my cheek. I am looking at the floor and try desperately to keep my voice steady. "I gave my best this term. I really did. I studied more than ever, trained harder, tried my best with friends and family... I gave everything I have and I did not give up. But it's not working. It's just not working... I just cannot do it anymore... I cannot do any of it... I- I-... I just want to-" The tears start flowing faster now as my voice breaks. My whole body is quivering and I feel small and vulnerable like I have always been in the past couple of months. But now something is different. WARNING: this book includes blood, manipulation, cursing, and mature topics (not smut please don't think that). Feel free to click off if any of these make you uncomfortable. ~•~ Something about it was so mysterious about this cave, and I wanted to know more. I entered the cave and saw a red crystal sealed in ice. "Woah." I whispered. The crystal glowed and the ice shattered. I jumped back and fell to the ground, watching as the ice broke completely. My eyes widened and I looked at my hands. "Did I do that?" I asked, but before I could answer, I heard a guard shout for backup as they had heard the ice shattering. I quickly jumped up and stashed the crystal in my pocket before leaving. I crept to the cave the following day, putting the crystal back into the remains of the ice pillar. As I walked away, the crystal fell, causing it to break into a million pieces. I jumped at the sudden noise and stumbled backwards, my eyes widening as a black smog formed around the crystal. "No, no, no, no! Frick." I desperately tried to grab the remains of the crystal, causing one to cut my hand. "Ow! Shit." I whispered, looking at my bleeding hand. "Tch, tch, tch, poor child." A demonic voice said. I looked up and saw that the black smog had two red eyes and a wide, sick smile that was dripping with venom. "I- who are you?" I asked, backing up. "The one who can help you out of here." It said, stretching out a hand. I looked it up and down and before I could answer, its hand plunged into my heart, causing me to scream out in pain. In the midst of unwritten rules and unspoken emotions How do you fight for a love that's forbidden? Subin knows she shouldn't fall, but how do you unlove someone who keeps pulling you closer-only to push you away? Bound by rules, secrets, and a tangled web of emotions, she finds herself caught between what's right and what feels real. But when betrayal cuts deep and lines are crossed, can they still find a way back to each other-or are they destined to keep breaking each other apart? _ "Class dismissed," she said curtly, already organizing her things. I was just about to pack my stuff when I heard her voice again. "Chung Subin." I froze mid-motion, my hand hovering over my bag. Why is she calling me now? The entire class went quiet, their eyes bouncing between me and Ms. Lee. "Yes, ma'am?" I answered, standing up hesitantly. "Follow me," she said, her tone leaving no room for argument. She didn't even look at me as she slung her bag over her shoulder. "And carry this," she added, motioning to a stack of papers and a book she had left on her desk. I glanced at Woo-ri, who was giving me the most bewildered look. "Go," she mouthed silently, clearly curious but also worried. I walked over to Ms. Lee's desk, quickly grabbing her things. Turning to Woo-ri, I gave her a small wave. "I'll catch up with you later, Woo-ri," I said softly. "Go ahead without me." "You sure? Don't let her eat you alive!" she whispered dramatically, but I waved her off with a nervous smile. _ A professor and her student, drawn to each other in ways neither of them can explain. The boundaries are clear, but their emotions refuse to be ignored.

24 new emails looked back at you from the screen. You could feel the headache setting in, but you opened your email anyway, looking through the new messages. Two from your statistics professor, about a new assignment, another one from the RA in the dorm building, one from the admissions office, about your application to the study abroad program, one from your American history professor- Hold the phone. You rapidly clicked on the email from the admissions office, scanning through the paragraphs. Reviewing your application to the program... taking into account your grades and your major... looking at schools in the area... pleased to say we can accept you into the program. Accepted. Part of you had forgotten that you had applied in the first place; it had been months ago back at the end of last semester, and then you had gone home for the summer and put it behind you. But being back at school had brought it to the forefront of your mind again. This was great. You had needed some good news today. Turning up the music, you danced out of your desk chair and jumped around the room a little, excited. You were going to Mexico for a semester. You could already picture it now - warm weather, good food, and firsthand experience speaking Spanish for at least six months, maybe more. Not to mention all the adventures you could have in a foreign country. This would be something you would remember for years, and just thinking about it made your day better.

Update biweekly: Saturday @1pm ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Blythe I was always taught that responsibility must not be taken lightly. I have worked for the past few days, without coming back home. My head is throbbing. My body is craving sleep. I arrive at my apartment and notice it's unlocked. I dismiss it and head to the bedroom. I loosen my tie as I open the door. My bed is occupied. But with two people, instead of one. "Bell?" "John! What are you doing here?" "Zac?" "It's not what you think John. I can explain." Tori pleased "Explain what, Really?! That you been sleeping with him, while I'm killing myself at work?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Nicole Garza The day I fell in love was during the first winter on this same day. Except I didn't fall in love today, instead I am soaking wet at the nearest cafe waiting for a cab. "Nicole, I came as soon as I heard," my best friend arrives at the cafe still in formal clothes. "Did you know?" I ask calmly. "I- I" she stutters "Waited for me to be humiliated?" I grit my teeth. "No that's not it. I did know but-" " But never thought you should tell me?!" I raise my voice "Well, I am not the one that left!" She fights back "You knew why I left! How do you think I feel finding out the love of my life married someone else!" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMAGES: From Pinterest and Google

When I slammed my locker shut and turned to see Toby standing there, watching me, I jumped in fright and dropped my bag. Talk about speaking of the devil. I picked it up quickly before he could and said a rushed "hi" before turning to leave. But Toby pulled me back to him making my flustered countenance change and I was suddenly defensive. I pulled away and made a face. "Do you need something or something?" I questioned him. "Relax," he said. "Are you in a hurry?". He sounded so sweet. And why was he looking down at me so innocently? "I'm not", I said with a shake of the head. He seemed very polite so I instantly felt bad for being rude. "What's up?". "You're Harvey, right? Harvey Celestine?". I nodded. "You're Maria's friend". "To the point, Meyers". I was quickly becoming bored. Toby looked surprised for a moment, although I didn't know why. But then, he smiled a little. "You left your geography note and textbook in class and that wouldn't do considering the fact that we have a geography test tomorrow". I immediately switched up and started thanking him profusely. All my sticky notes and reminders were in there. He smiled and waved it off before turning to leave. When I got home, Maria gave me a phone call, squealing like a child. "Toby invited me to his birthday party this Saturday!". I pulled the phone away from my ears to protect myself from the extra scream that came after that. "He said you could come too". "No thanks, I've got to study". "Tests are ending tomorrow". "Uh college..". "...isn't until the end of the year? Dude, why are you being so ....not fun?". "Dude," I said, getting up to pace. "I just don't want to come". "Why?". "I don't know". "Dude, why?". "I said I don't.....". Immediately, I was interrupted by a stone flying through my window and into my room. I instantly screamed.
