Lanterns on the window sill always meant safety. Shining the way back to a warm type of safety the carefully crafted candles brought. Tommy's family each had one, Pink or green, even yellow. With swirling designs in the other candles colors. Tommy's candle was red.

But after Wilburs candle blew out after he died, Tommy didn't expect to see his candle accompanying the extinguished lantern on Phil's windows sill. Because- he could have done more right? He could have saved Wilbur or fought with Technoblade like he had secretly wanted too, but he hadn't. So now, escaping exile and stumbling through the tundra. He sees Three lanterns in his brothers window. He cries, because this must be a joke? Some cruel thing his dying mind came up with to comfort him? He collapses into the snow, hardly registering the crunching footsteps rushing towards him.

'Before we leave, I was wondering something... I noticed that your social worker called you Will and I suppose I'm wondering which name you preferred?' Wilbur was surprised that he noticed such a small thing, but he supposed it accounted for the surprise that he had noticed earlier. 'Oh, I prefer Wilbur if that's okay sir. My social worker always forgot to call me Wilbur and I stopped correcting him a while back.' He replied, choosing to ignore the feeling of anxiety at the realisation that was the most he had talked throughout their meeting. 'Alright mate. Oh, and please call me Phil. Sir makes me sound older than I actually am.' OR A fluff to angst to fluff adoption AU where Wilbur Soot gets adopted into the SBI household just before his 18th birthday after years in the foster system. Now, he must learn how to trust his newfound family and find that it's okay to be dependent on others. But after so many years of only relying on only himself, Wilbur struggles to do that. After all, can a story ever be that simple? Trigger warnings are at the top of each chapter. There aren't many but check them out anyway. Cross posted on AO3, search up the title to find it on there :)
