In a small village in the south of England, Frankie Gibbs is found dead in a river, how did she get there? no one knows, DCI Burgess and his partner DI West try to solve the case, unknowing of the situation they have landed themselves in, also along for the ride is DI West's fiancée DC Palmer, who is trying her best to help her future husband take a step back from it all and not let his ambition and arrogance get in the way of their relationship as it has done on prior occasion
West and Burgess band together to interview 5 of the people who knew Frankie Gibbs best, Stuart Hibbert is the first up, followed by classmates Theodore Harvey-Rollins and his unrequited love interest Howard McPherson, Olivia Nichols who often spends her time talking about her mothers pharmacy and Isabella Bates, who's mother sells her body to put food on the table.
As they delve deeper into the case West starts to stop focusing on the world around him and he stops looking after himself and shelters himself behind paperwork and theorising who could've killed Gibbs, his relationships both with his partner and his fiancée crumble before him and he is left heartbroken and angry, putting more fuel on the DI West fire, but will he solve the case or will he wind up fishing for red herrings?
