Most kids dream of the day they will turn eighteen, some because they are ready to move out, others want the chance to finally gamble, vote, or buy cigarettes. James was no different, though he was in no hurry to leave his parents. So it was to his great disappointment when shortly before his birthday he started getting sick. The closer he came to the day he became an adult the worse he felt. He tries not to let it bother him though, nor the fact that his father will be gone on yet another mysterious business trip that he refuses to talk about. Yes most children dream of turning eighteen, but for James it's about to turn into a nightmare.

During a family trip on a bright spring day, the world falls into madness. It is just another day in the life of Ethan Swain, a teenage Boy Scout, until a sudden psychotic rage comes over one-third of the human population followed by invaders from under the Earth. Surviving the first wave of violence is only the beginning. Alone, he sets out on a desperate journey across Central Texas to reunite with his mother, the only family he has left. Along the way, he discovers that insanity isn't the only change affecting the world. Can he survive in a world that is falling apart? Will he reach home and safety before it is too late?
