The Somme Offensive. 1st of July 1916 - 18th November 1916
During the Mid Point of the First World War, we see the British Empire and the French Third Republic against the German Empire. This battle had around 3 million men fighting and around 1 million were killed or injured. Making it one of the worlds most deadliest battles in human history. Initial plans called for the French army to undertake the main part of the Somme Offensive, supported on the northern flank by the Fourth Army of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). With the Imperial German Army went to fight in the Fields of Verdun on the Meuse on the 21st of February 1916, French commanders diverted many of the divisions intended for the Somme and the "supporting" attack by the British became the principal effort. The British troops of the Somme comprised a mixture of the remains of the pre-war army, the Territorial Force and Kitchener's Army, a force of wartime volunteers.
In this story we see 16 year old James Harrison go into war after lying about his age, without birth certificates being looked at he managed to join as he met the height of 5'3" and looked like an 18 year old. Being shipped out to the Western Front during WW1 as a young lad and seeing all of the horrors that the war had to offer.
