Pursuing his aspirations of becoming a detective-having spent much of his young life trying to uncover the truth about his own missing time-Jake Gunner takes up residence in Delray just down the street from what will turn out to be his greatest mystery ever. "And in time, Jake Gunner-originally Jack Nolan-goes about his business in a twined and twisted, tongue-in-cheek time tease that affects everyone, and everything, around him time and again with a little help from his friends.
Early on, a woman enters Gunner's office. She's troubled as her son, Jared, seems to have disappeared suddenly; he's also stolen her gun and is convinced, because of an incident in her past, a one night stand gone awry, that he is out to track down and kill his estranged father. That same afternoon, after speaking with her, the detective is led out to Shepherd Canyon and the home of the biological father of Jared Monroe at 211 Waymark Terrace and, who just happens to be, Professor Steve Dayton, one of the most eminent scientists of his generation in matters of quantum mechanics and temporal persuasion; however, it's soon discovered the Professor was shot and killed earlier that morning and, by the time Gunner arrives on the scene, both men have disappeared without a trace.
"Sometimes we think we've met someone or been somewhere before. It's a feeling we embrace somehow, though usually nothing more; still, it's distracting and torments us and it teases just the same, but it's something we can't touch because it barely has a name. We can't discard the notion, stroking thoughts like gentle rain; it's just a warm, inviting friend is déjà vu, come once again..."
