Emelia Kraven had been so careful the first year of living as an exile in the Frankian court. She had hoped to mourn her losses in peace and nurse her poor health after a youth full of adventure, danger, and death, but that life of a lonely widow has become a dream with the king in hot pursuit of her despite his own pressures to marry someone who could give Frankia its heir. What started as her being the object of his entertainment and curiosity has grown into admiration and more. Unfortunately for Em, changing the Brittanian court for the Frankian court has not really changed the nature of her environment. Intriguing and maneuvering for power has always been the way of the court, but her aim has always been to survive. Em must contend with new losses but also new dreams as the dangers she had been so desperate to escape from in the Brittanian court are emerging again in the Frankian court.
