She discovers she possesses this gift because she is part Wata, a primordial race of water divinities that originated in Africa. As she learns her newfound heritage and powers, she falls for a doctor. When she returns home to America, there are strange occurrences: people that were lost at sea return, sightings of "water people", and mysterious deaths. Meri must learn to balance her inner duality as well as the fragile balance between the vengeful ancestral gods and humanity.
