A secluded village continues to be eroded by the beasts that lurk in the woods. Pushed to the brink, its people have developed a plan to extinguish the blood-lusted creatures. With little population left, and far from the rest of society, both boys and girls are forced to protect the village against the slayings, in a group nicknamed the Shepherds.
Scarlet is one of those forced to join the group, alongside her childhood friends, Maddox and Matthias. Although not confident in her abilities, her heart is indebted to the village that raised her.
However, by a chance encounter with one of the beasts lures her into their world, leading her to realize the carnage between the two sides runs deeper than they've been told -just as another force appears and threatens their lives.
