Hundreds of years after the Ground Day bomb, the bomb that rid the earth of the Gray Walker infestation that had plagued them for decades, humans have been living their lives underground. In the New Brook colony, children are given the choice to travel to the surface when they come of age.

Nola had been taught by her parents that the surface of the earth was a deadly and dangerous place, but she had always been curious as to what lay above them. She had heard wonderful things about the surface and she planned to prove her parents wrong when she became of age and traveled to the surface with her friends. Will the surface be everything it had been advertised to be? What happens when Nola learns everything she had ever been taught beneath the surface was a lie?
