A lonesome teenager in the 1980s makes unlikely friendships and learns to love herself.


Hattie Erickson has never been popular. She never had any friends and was basically invisible to the world. People knew her as that weird girl who draws all the time, reads comic books, watches nerdy movies, and writes in a diary. This had never bothered her until freshman year of high school where she must venture through it as a weird girl without the help and guidance of her father, who died recently, and instead with her mother, the perfect blonde cheerleader-type woman who had been the most popular at her high school. By joining the most powerful clique in school, Hattie's days of unpopularity seem to be behind her, despite the fact she sacrifices her personality in order to fit in with people who treat her with no respect. Come senior year, she finds herself friends with Aubrey Goodman, Mona Bailey, Bonnie Salvage and Wanda Warner. The four of them are by far the most hated and unpopular people at the school. Hattie senses there is more to them than meets the eye and discovers their biggest secret. Realizing how much she'd rather be their friend, Hattie has to make a tough decision. Should she remain popular and make it through high school in one piece, or pursue a friendship that can bring both happiness and danger?

No one knew it, but her father was a high functioning alcoholic that often took his anger out on his family. With her older sister now in college, it had turned to her more often. Laying low in general was a good strategy. Across town, Ryan was prepping for his final year in high school. While he wasn't the stereotypical quarterback of the football team, he did fit into the popular crowd. His sports of choice included basketball and soccer, either of which might line him up for a scholarship next year. Ryan had a group of close friends and a lot of adoring acquaintances. It wasn't easy juggling his athletics and keeping the grades up, but he was just that good. The supporting parents didn't hurt either. It might be a cliché romance, but it will be fun to see what the year and beyond holds. ------------------------------------------ This is a story I wrote years ago, or at least partially wrote. He may not acknowledge her at school but every afternoon he was all hers. He was the best friend that any girl could wish for. He was sweet, kind and funny. He never let the fact she had no powers bother him then at all. With the arrival of Zeke Worthington her life became in disarray. He understood her; he knew what it felt like to be the outsider. He told her he had come from a place where he was misunderstood too. Zeke seemed immensely happy to meet Winter, even though he befriended Caspian too. Why Caspian had a problem with it, Winter doesn't understand. It wasn't like he went out of his way to be friends with her during school hours. Even as Winter and Zeke get closer, Caspian becomes increasingly unhappy and agitated with her. She can't change things though, after all in the long run all she can prove is that she has no powers, but maybe she will be surprised.
