A Dark Expanse Story

Following the departure of the galactic overlords the Zyxlar, the Silicate desert world of Charmed Rock descends into chaos. When the Thoknar Protectorate steps in, Lat (always one to obey the Elders' commands) is the first to join this paramilitary crime organization. 

Lat is the kind of solider who gets through by shouting agreement to his sergeant's commands. But he's uneasy about collecting protection money from the impoverished citizens of Horde City. Being a kind-hearted type of guy, he begins to use his own money instead. Alas, Lat is not an academic thinker, and he soon gets caught and receives a punishment exile tracking and killing the dangerous scorpials in the bad lands.

Although the planet has liquid water and a breathable atmosphere, it is believed to host only microbial life. However, upon arriving, Shawn and the rest of the colonists learn that assumption was grossly incorrect. In a brutal attack from rampaging wildlife, everyone but Shawn and four other colonists are killed. The five survivors retreat to the cavernous network beneath the ground seeking safety, but they soon come to a terrible discovery. These caves aren't ordinary caves, and they are no safer down under than they were on the surface. [][][] This was originally my entry for the 2021 Open Novella Contest, and it received an honorable mention! It has now been expanded into a full length novel. For a little piece of home resides in the shadows. A dark one that, although Socks has never formally encountered, knows all about and had been influenced by greatly. If it weren't for him, he may not even have been on Earth. And that little piece of home...
