Lena Njeru is a Kenyan-German 15-year-old who joined the survey corps after the fall of wall Maria in the Shiganshina District.

Though she was born in Germany, both of her parents were immigrants from Kenya. Lena's parents had a hard time assimilating to the culture there, so after Lena was born, they gave her a foreign name, put her in school, and made sure she knew German language along with her native Swahili tongue. Lena and her parents were denied access to the inner walls due to a military police officer who had a personal prejudice against immigrants. Lena's parents, Absko and Naomi Njeru, were able to sneak their daughter onto a passing cargo carriage before being approached by a titan and tragically eaten. Lena and her parents were the only known immigrants to the area.

Lena is an only child. Her mother and father thought to conceive again many of times, however because the family was already struggling and all of their money went to making sure Lena had the best upbringing, another child in the family wouldn't have been possible.

Lena joined the scouts after deciding that it was the best decision to make use of her life. She went through rough training and originally planned to join the Garrison Regiment but changed her mind and joined the scouting legion because she felt she had nothing else to really lose.
