Estão presentes a ânsia pela dignidade, a busca vã pela verdade e pela liberdade, trabalhadas de tal forma que fazem deste livro um dos melhores romances norte-americanos da segunda metade do século 20. Apesar de ser o quarto romance dos seis que o autor escreveu e de ter sido lançado quando ele já contava mais de sessenta anos, Misto-quente ilumina toda a obra de Bukowski.
